The present work can be compared to a study of insects by Pieter Holsteyn the Elder (see Jean-Luc Baroni, Master Paintings and Drawings, New York 2009, n. 11, catalogue). It is of interest not only for its quality but also for the rareness of the subject. Few entomologic studies are known by the artist who concentrated more on paintings of flowers and animals. He was esteemed for his meticulous and detailed drawings as well as being a glass painter in Haarlem. In this picture the painter draws his attention to the beetles, five in number, together with a moth (Manduca Sexta). The fine brushstrokes gives the moth lightness in contrast to the deep and pronounced contours of the beetles. The sheet was most probably commissioned by a collector interested in natural science.
